Our Challenges
Education is said to be the ladder to the future. Families and children in sub-Saharan Africa know
this to be true. However, political and economic realities challenge this future. In rural areas of
Africa, major obstacles include:
» Per capita income of less than $1 a day
» Life expectancy of 43 years
» Burying at least two people per day due to AIDS
» A ratio of one teacher per 100 students in primary schools
» Lack of school fees for secondary schools
» Lack of school lunches for students and teachers
» Lack of textbooks and school supplies
» Lack of transportation, children walk 4-5 miles a day to get to school
» Lack of safe drinking water
Our Commitment
We are committed to using your gift to the fullest possible extent in helping those in need on
education.
Education develops intellectual capacity and social skills. Levels of education correlate with income
levels and children who complete only four years of school are better equipped to move out of poverty.
Of those attending school there is a marked gender disparity in education. Girls are secondary to boys.
In addition, orphans both girls and boys, are often denied any educational opportunity and children
with disabilities rarely attend school.
Studies have proven that providing education is one of the best strategies for breaking the hold of
poverty. Children with education have greater confidence to make decisions for themselves, more likely
to seek medical attention, better informed on nutrition and far more likely to educate their own
children.
User fees plus the additional costs for books and uniforms force families to make a choice which child
will attend school and which child will remain at home. Faced with this difficult choice, their own
children will be first. The children most often denied education opportunities are orphans living with
extended family members or guardians and children with disabilities. Disabled children seldom attend
school. They have a low social status and generally considered to have no value to society. They're
most often rejected by their parents and by the community.
CGP offers educational opportunities for those children living in these under developed areas who have
been denied this right, primarily the orphaned child and the disabled child.
How You Can Help
School Buildings:
$8,500 will fund buildings for the school that are urgently required:
» Dinning hall
» Library and larger science lab
» Residences for teachers
» Dormitories for students living a great distance from the school
» Wood and metal work shops
» Sewing shop
» Art room
Educational Programming:
$50 can help purchase classroom supplies for one child
$100 can help purchase textbooks for one child
$100 can help provide lunch for one child for one year in school
$250 can help plant trees on school grounds
$105-596 can help sponsor a needy/orphan child at Pathfinder Academy
$500 can help support teacher salaries
$800 can help sponsor a needy/orphan child in a secondary school in Kenya
Suggested donation amounts represent a significant contribution towards stated projects. Funds donated to Education Programming will be used to support projects in this category based on greatest need.
The school is a vital asset to the community and without it these students have no opportunity for a secondary education. The school has strong community support from local residents and needs our help to succeed.
