Environmental Development Youth
Movement (EDYM)

Environmental Development Youth Movement (EDYM) is a non-governmental, locally initiated environment organization established in 1992 (registered as an NGO in 1995). EDYM was created by a group of concerned citizens from Have, in the Volta Region of Ghana, when the degradation of the environment and its related problems in the community became apparent.

EDYM has an overall objective to fight environmental degradation and conserve biodiversity. To achieve these goals, over the past 10 years EDYM has been mobilizing, educating, and training the youth, and others, in sustainable agricultural practices and reforestation.

EDYM attempts to spread 'alternative sustainable livelihood practices' which are income generating livelihood techniques that are environmentally friendly. The goal is that rural farmers will undertake these practices, thus reducing their negative impact on the environment through unsound farming practices such as farming on the mountain slopes, unnecessary bush-burning, only planting mono-cultures of crops, etc.

Vision

To create a sustainable environment through empowerment on poverty reduction strategies and conservation, to achieve self-reliance

Aims

The principal concern of EDYM is the tuning of the youth to restoration and preservation of the environment for current and future generations. EDYM therefore:

  • Creates environmental consciousness among the youth and communities through educational campaigns, seminars, symposia and conferences
  • Educates the youth and school leavers on various environmental conservation projects such as plant nursery establishment, agroforestry, vegetable production, compost making, snail farming, grasscutter rearing, mango grafting etc.
