Barzakh Falah was established in June of 2008, to address the pressing needs of abused, abandoned and at-risk children living in Belize. An important component in this is the ongoing development of a sustainable and self-sufficient organic farm and its integration into each child's education and maturation.
Overview
The mission of Barzakh Falah is grounded in respect, believing that every child has the right to grow and develop in a healthy and safe environment, in a cooperative atmosphere of care, love, stability, and hope. This care is vital for children who have been abandoned or abused. They, especially, deserve a sense of belonging in an atmosphere where they can learn to care for one other, and to appreciate and care for Earth's plants, soil, and animals. For the children at Barzakh Falah, this shared experience evokes the feeling that they are a part of something worthwhile, something grand, which pulls everyone together and renews their spirits. The program also encourages a culture of sustainability, teaching children to respect the environment and cultivate long-term self-reliance and security. At the same time, the children further their emotional development through mentoring and guidance.
Locale
The village of Georgeville, set in the always-green rolling hills of western Belize's Cayo district, is the program's center and the location of its organic farm. Georgeville is very small, with limited goods and services (update: there's a small Internet Cafe there now!), but ten miles away is the town of San Ignacio, with its block-long business district featuring restaurants and cafes, plus a couple of Internet cafes and hostels. The local medical facility is also in San Ignacio, and the town is approximately ten miles from the border with Guatemala. The population served in the surrounding area is approximately 1500.
